As Star Wars hit cinemas, the BBC developed Blake's 7, a proper, big-budget Sci-Fi drama for grown-ups about a convicted paedophile terrorist trying to overthrow the government. Blake's 7 sneered at Doctor Who – this was fighting dirty in nifty spaceships. It was like Star Trek gone rotten - no whimsy, no rubbish monsters, and definitely no camp. Well, that was the idea.

With the news the show is getting a big-budget makeover perennially in the ether, why not refresh your memory who was in the original before they replace your favourite characters with air-brushed Americans, and change their sexes. Probably.

Hi-De-Hi! launched in 1980 when the holiday camps it was based on were already becoming a thing of the past. Like many David Croft comedies it was nostalgically mocking of a vanishing era – a Butlins' style resort at the end of the 1950s filled with washed-up variety acts and bright young things with no idea the swinging sixties were just around the corner.

The show ran for nine years, mainly down to its richly grotesque characters and a nation's desperate hope that one day Peggy would become a Yellowcoat. But what ever happened to the stars of the BBC's only camp comedy?

After 'Roseanne' became popular, networks began looking for other stand-up comedians with acts that could be turned into sitcoms. Veteran comic Tim Allen had been honing just such an act for more than a decade. His theme of men being dumb animals at heart, with a love of all things mechanical, was an obvious fit.

'Home Improvement' (1991-'99) remained one of the top-rated sitcoms for nearly the entire '90s, peaking at No. 1 in its third season. Allen, Pam Anderson, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Zachery Ty Bryan all became household names during the series' run. Now, 10 years after the final season ended, many of the actors are still in the mainstream, while others have fallen into the clichéd hit sitcom lull that follows. -- By Ryan McKee

'Roseanne' broke the mold of the traditional family sitcom. The Conners, headed by a brash matriarch, were an unglamorous blue-collar family in small-town Illinois. The nine-season series (1988-1997) mixed comedy with the heavy issues of domestic violence, homosexuality, unemployment, teen sex, abortion and alcoholism.

Its final season was a disappointment (winning the lottery?), made more strange in the series finale when it was revealed that the various plot twists were part of Roseanne Conner's fictionalized writings about her family.

However, the series ranked in the top four of the nation's most-watched shows for most of its tenure, won four Emmys, three Golden Globes and a Peabody Award and served as a launching pad for John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, George Clooney, Sarah Chalke and Roseanne herself. -- By Aimee Deeken
