The Big Movies on TV Over Christmas

Muppet's Christmas Carol, Madagascar, Wizard of Oz, Pirates of the Caribbean
Christmas telly, eh? So much to watch but so little time. Well never fear my square-eyed viewers because we've painstakingly sliced through the festive TV schedule to select the juiciest must-watch movies over the next ten days.

Basically, this bumper TV movie guide is the only thing you'll need to make sure that your Christmas visual entertainment goes with a bang (we also recommend you have a mountain of chocolate by your side). One final thing, because yours truly doesn't have Sky at home, I've selected the movie highlights that can be found on Freeview which most people have got access to.

And so, without further delay, let the Christmas telly watching begin. And yes, The Wizard of Oz is on. Happy Christmas!

50 greatest viral videos revealed in new doc

Brett DominoNow before you dismiss this programme about the 50 greatest viral videos as nothing more than clips of cats doing weird things - it's much better than that.

The two-part feature length show dives into the world of internet culture and gives you an insight to the history of viral videos. There are interviews with viral superstars and a run down of the 50 best creations, which are surprisingly diverse.

Produced by Current TV the list of top virals is based not just on video views, but also factors in each item's broader socio-cultural impact.

Hollyoaks to flash forward to the future

Calvin and CarmelLove it or hate it - Hollyoaks is about to do something no other soap has done before: breaking the time continuum to 'flash forward' six months into the future.

Next Monday the scheduled spoiler, reminiscent of hit Five series FlashForward, will feature scenes from May 2010. Fans of the teen-filled, high-drama, soap will be shocked to see the second wedding of show favourites Calvin Valentine (Ricky Whittle) and Carmel McQueen (Gemma Merna).

Louis Walsh gives us his life in new doc

Louis WalshX Factor judge and the man behind some of the most successful acts in UK pop history, Louis Walsh, will have his life revealed in a new documentary next week.

The programme will discover the real strength of friendship between Louis and Simon Cowell despite the X-Factor dramas and will look at the tragic loss of his dear friend Stephen Gateley in emotional interviews.

The show contains candid chats with Simon Cowell, Ronan Keating, Sharon Osbourne and of course the man himself.

Make love, not Warcraft

Current TV - Second SkinTom 'Geeky Tom' Page puts down his Kempston Joystick and stops raiding long-enough to watch Current TV's latest dcumentary, charting the lives of dedicated online gamers...

Second Skin is a rare documentary, depicting an even rarer occurrence - The loves, habits and relationships of MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Player Game) players, because these people have a serious stigma attached to them.

BBC banned Blyton for 30 years

Enid BlytonTonight BBC Four will air a drama about Enid Blyton's life, revealing the woman behind such stories as the Famous Five, Secret Seven and Noddy. However, the Beeb hasn't always been so appreciative of the great writer...

Blyton's work was previously banned by the corporation for nearly 30 years, until 1963, because they thought she was a second-rate-author.

Archived documents have shown that she was kept off the radio because executives dismissed her plays and books as "very small beer", revealed the Daily Mail today.

Pick of the Day: Modern Family

gloria and alex have a girly day out We're in one of those periods where British comedy is at a low ebb (with the honourable exceptions of The Inbetweeners and welcome return of The Thick of It), and Uncle Sam reigns supreme.

We all know about the likes of 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm, but one show has been quietly winning over fans and critics alike - Modern Family.

It's a weird hybrid of Malcolm in the Middle's warmth, and The Simpsons dark underbelly of cynicism. As with most US shows, there are moments of homespun cringyness, but generally it's a darkly funny family comedy that puts 2 Point 4 Children firmly in the shade. I realise that's not much of a compliment, but let's go with it.

Pick of the Day: Soldier's Stories

ken hames - sandy rowThis year marks the 40th anniversary of the beginning of Operation Banner - the deployment of troops in the streets of Northern Ireland, the longest continuous tour in the British Army's history.

Faced with the break-down of law and order in the province, culminating in the three-day Battle of the Bogside, the Harold Wilson government ordered the first troops into Northern Ireland on the 14th August 1969. Over the next three decades some 300,000 troops would serve in what became a war in all but name.

TV Dinners: October 6th - 11th

Masterchef - the professionalsLucy Ferguson brings us this week's food TV highlights.

Masterchef The Professionals is dominating the food programming schedules this week. We see so many chefs at such a fast rate that unless they do something that really sets them apart – gouge their fist with a knife, sink into a corner In tears – it's hard to feel any empathy towards the contestants.

The scheduling is also a thing of wonder: This week alone the show is on for half an hour, an hour, an hour and a half and forty five minutes. You wouldn't get that with Strictly Come Dancing.

Sadly Jamie Oliver's rich and comical trip across the States reaches its conclusion this week when he meets Native Americans in Arizona. What do Native Americans eat? You will be as clueless as the host, but why does he feel the need to say "I'm realising food can really bring people together" in every episode?
