With the death of George O'Malley (T.R. Knight) greeting 'Grey's Anatomy' fans at the beginning of this season, Seattle Grace has experienced a void ... or should we say vacancy? According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kim Raver will be stepping into the job opening left by Knight's departure, starting with episode 9. And the plot thickens -- Michael Ausiello reports that Raver will be playing a surgeon and possible new love interest for Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd).Joining 'Grey's' is clearly a coup for Raver, whose prior credits include '24' and 'Third Watch.' She was last seen alongside Brooke Shields in NBC's 'Lipstick Jungle,' which was canceled after 20 episodes, yet had a surprisingly vocal cult following.
The addition of a known actor like Raver could be an effort to bolster the show's audience, which has shrunk over the last few seasons. After peaking in season 3 with an average of 21.3 million viewers, ratings for 'Grey's' have tapered off and now hover in the 13 to 15 million range (typically depending on who is about to die on the show).
It's likely, however, that Raver won't have that much screen time with two of the show's biggest leading ladies, as this move is probably also meant to counter the fact that Ellen Pompeo will be out on maternity leave this season and Katherine Heigl will be on hiatus shooting 'Life as We Know It,' opposite 'Mad Men''s Christina Hendricks. With those two literally out of the picture, Raver's task will be to continue the show's tradition of strong female leads ... or to make up for the fact that the name "Izzie" has become synonymous with eye-rolling and yelling (both on her part and ours).
The Raver casting also comes on the heels of the news that 'Greek''s Jesse Williams and veteran actress Martha Plimpton will join the cast for multi-episode arcs. Is 'Grey's' having a resurgence, or are these just preventive measures to try and keep more viewers from being tempted by 'CSI' over on CBS? Given the intriguing Owen-Cristina love triangle storyline, Raver's surgeon could serve as an antidote for a show that might be suffering from a bit of character fatigue.
What do you think? Is 'Grey's' hitting its stride again? Will Raver's addition make up for the absences of Pompeo and Heigl? Or is 'Grey's Anatomy' a lost cause?

Just what this series needs, an even larger cast of one dimensional characters that are poorly written and developed.

Kim Raver is the Ted McGinley of sit-coms. This show has jumped the shark.

If I added correctly the cast now stands at 12.
It's to big already, and if true that's one of the reasons TR Knight left. His airtime was reduced to a minute here and there.
Now they want to add another cast member?
Bad move IMO.
When all is said and done, this hour show is actually 40 minutes without commercials.
The original cast will revolt when they get approximately 3 minutes of script handed to them.

YES! YES! YES! KIM RAVER IS A TOTALLY HOT BABE,AND SHE WILL DEFINITELY BRING SOMETHING TO THE (OPERATING) TABLE. JUST LIKE SHE DID IN "3RD WATCH", "24", AND OF COURSE, "LIPSTICK JUNGLE". I MAY ACTUALLY TUNE IN TO THIS SHOW NOW.

I like Kim Raver I just don't know that this show needs yet another star vying for air time. The main characters aren't developed enough and the supporting characters get even less air time. Frankly, I think this show needs better writing. It is getting old. Good story ideas, good characters but the writing.... ugh. I am so sick of the repetetive lines. "I get you"..."I.Get.You"... "Ilove you"..."I.Love.YOU". drives me batty.
Oh and don't get me started on Private Practice! Even better characters, better actors and great story ideas and yet the writing is going to cost the show. The writing is horrible. I am let down every week :-(
Oh well, Good Luck Kim Raver :-)

Raver is a terrible additon. I cringed every time she appeared on Third Watch. She has no acting ability whatsoever!

The slow sucks anyway. PRIVATE PRACTICE blows GA away....

Dont add Raver to the cast! That's gonna be a mistake! Cristina needs to be happy this time.. It's her turn... And when Ellen Pompeo goes out I'm gone, she makes the whole show...

I think Kim Raver is hot! I've only seen a handful of GA episodes and feel she will add to the cast. However, I don't agree with hooking her up with Owen...he's GROSS! Everyone who is complaining about the large cast...well you need to get rid of Ellen Pompeo, she's annoying and what more can you do with her character anyway? If you don't give Kim Raver a large lead role you're crazy! What you should do is leave GA to fail by itself and bring her back on Lipstick Jungle!!!

this could possibly be the beginning of the end. I don't want to see new characters but would like to explore the lives of the one's already there.
